Perspective
I’m always hesitant to go off on Carolina sports tangents on tumblr because really I’m just here to post sweet tunes and funny memes. But I cannot resist right now. All of this Jim Tressel/Ohio State business offers too much perspective on what’s happened with Carolina’s football program over the last year. I apologize in advance for this post’s lack of brevity. If you don’t care about UNC or Ohio State or college sports in general, nothing to see here. If you do, click through…
In one of my favorite novels, The Moviegoer, Walker Percy refers to a phenomenon he calls “certification”. Basically, it’s the idea that the place where we are isn’t real to us, or certified, until we’ve seen it captured in a frame (in the book, said frame is specifically a movie screen). Then, that place becomes Somewhere, rather than Anywhere.
The young man extending his leg in the middle of this photograph is Walker Percy, in 1934, as a freshman at the University of North Carolina, walking into the Varsity Theatre. (Actually, at the time, the Carolina Theatre was in the building before moving to the corner of Franklin and Columbia.) If my college years weren’t already certified, they are now.
“What is the nature of the search? you ask. Really it is very simple; at least for a fellow like me. So simple that it is easily overlooked. The search is what anyone would undertake if he were not sunk in the everydayness of his own life.”
